Special Correspondent: Bangladesh’s engagement with Silicon Valley-based global innovation platform Plug and Play has opened a potential pathway to mobilise more than US$500 million in foreign direct investment (FDI), alongside technology partnerships and innovation cooperation.
A high-level Bangladesh delegation held discussions with Plug and Play leadership at its Silicon Valley headquarters on September 28, focusing on attracting international investment, strengthening the startup and innovation ecosystem, developing artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and technology talent, and connecting Bangladesh with global corporations and investors, said a press release here today.
The delegation was led by Adviser to the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Finance and Planning Prof Dr Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir.

During the meeting, representatives of the Bangladesh government and Plug and Play signed a cooperation document to advance collaboration, including exploring the establishment of one or more AI Centres of Excellence in Bangladesh.
Following the meeting, Plug and Play presented a strategic partnership proposal outlining a potential pathway to mobilise more than $500 million in FDI by leveraging its international network of corporations, investors, startups and innovation partners.
The proposal identified Bangladesh’s technology workforce, universities, High-Tech Parks, industrial capacity and growing domestic market as key foundations for attracting global investment.
A major component of the proposal is the development of a Bangladesh Tech Center and an AI Center of Excellence to connect Bangladeshi startups, universities and technology talent with global corporate and investment networks.
The proposed areas of focus include ICT and AI, consumer electronics, light engineering, pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, and semiconductor testing and packaging.
The proposal also outlined investment mobilisation pathways through startup and venture financing, international corporate engagement, workforce development, university-industry collaboration, and efforts to attract multinational technology and manufacturing operations to Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh delegation welcomed the proposal and stressed the need to translate the engagement into concrete and commercially viable projects capable of generating investment, quality employment, technology transfer and export opportunities, while integrating Bangladesh more closely with global
technology value chains.
The delegation included State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Boby Hajjaj, Adviser to the Prime Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and Science and Technology Rehan Asif Asad, Protocol Officer-2 to the Prime
Minister Kamrul Islam and Deputy Press Secretary-1 to the Prime Minister Md Jahidul Islam.
Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States Tareq Md Ariful Islam and Consul General of Bangladesh in Los Angeles Kazi Muhammad Jabed Iqbal also participated in the meeting.
The Consulate General of Bangladesh in Los Angeles will coordinate follow-up with Plug and Play, relevant government agencies and other stakeholders to advance the proposed cooperation and facilitate further investor engagement.
The proposed $500 million-plus figure is a prospective FDI opportunity, not a committed investment, according to the release. Specific investments and projects would be developed through further engagement, due diligence, financing arrangements and necessary approvals.
