Staff Correspondent: The World’s Poultry Science Association – Bangladesh Branch (WPSA-BB) is preparing for one of the most vibrant and participatory elections in its history, with voting scheduled to take place on Saturday, 26 July 2025, at the Mahal Hall of Jamuna Future Park Convention Center in Dhaka, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
After a long time, there is visible joy and excitement across the poultry and veterinary communities, as most of the executive positions of WPSA-BB are going to election, unlike previous years when many posts were filled uncontested. The competitive spirit and democratic participation have revived interest and engagement among members across academia, research and industry.
Some top posts have already been decided without contest. Shamsul Arefin Khaled has been elected as President, while Md. Sirajul Hoque takes the role of Senior Vice President. Both Vice President positions have gone to Md. Azmal Hossain and Mohammad Tauheed Hossain and Prof. Dr. Md. Elias Hossain has been elected unopposed as Secretary for Publicity and Publications.
The real focus now lies on the fiercely contested positions. For General Secretary, the election will be between Md. Asaduzzaman (Mezba) (Voter No. 180) and Mohammad Fayzur Rahman (Voter No. 70), both well-known for their extensive involvement in poultry sector leadership and organizational affairs.
The Joint Secretary position will be contested between Dr. Sadek Ahmed (Voter No. 243) and Shah Fahad Habib (Voter No. 384), each backed by supporters from various corners of the poultry and livestock community.
The race for Treasurer features Dr. Md. Nurul Islam Shawon (Voter No. 192) against Mohammad Shahadat Hossain (Voter No. 82), both of whom bring administrative and project-based experience relevant to managing WPSA-BB’s financial affairs.
In the Secretary for Science and Information Technology position, Prof. Dr. Md. Mahmudul Hasan Sikder (Voter No. 390) and Dr. Md. Sazedul Karim Sarker (Voter No. 69) are going head-to-head. Their contributions to academic research, education and digital engagement in poultry science have made this contest particularly noteworthy.
In the Animal Husbandry (AH) Background category, five professionals are contesting for three posts: Md. Daulat Hossain (Voter No. 32), Mohammed Nazmus Sakib Hamim (Voter No. 297), Dr. Md. Rakibul Hassan (Voter No. 205), Md. Shahjalal Sarker (Voter No. 416) and Md. Zakaria Islam (Voter No. 200). This category features a rich mix of academic and field expertise making the competition intense.
For the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) Background, the five candidates competing for three seats are: Dr. Mohammed Ashraf Uddin (Voter No. 395), Dr. Azimul Haque (Voter No. 326), Dr. Md. Rakibur Rahman (Voter No. 199), Dr. Shamim Ahmed (Voter No. 285), and Dr. Md. Sultan Masum (Voter No. 753). Their candidacies represent the evolving role of veterinary professionals in poultry and animal health policymaking.
The most crowded contest appears in the Industry Background category, where six professionals are contesting for three posts: A. K. M. Sayeed Sarwar (Voter No. 47), Muhammad Abdul Jalil (Voter No. 342), Md. Abdur Rahman (Voter No. 275), Debangshu Bikash Bhowmik (Voter No. 186), Md. Nazim Uddin (Voter No. 392) and Dr. H. M. Nazmul Haq (Voter No. 281). This strong lineup from the private sector reflects the industry’s growing influence in WPSA-BB’s future direction.
The election is being overseen by a neutral and active Election Commission, comprising Chairman Mr. Sayem ul Haq, members Dr. Mohammad Rafiqul Islam and Md. Shariful Haque. The Commission has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a free, fair and participatory election.
As WPSA-BB continues to play a critical role in advancing poultry science, sustainable production, education, and policy development in Bangladesh, this year’s election is being closely watched. The outcome will shape not only the leadership of the organization but also influence broader sectoral goals in research, technology, and public-private collaboration for the next two years.
