WVPA-BB Organizes Landmark 3-Minute Thesis Competition in Dhaka

First-ever academic showcase of its kind in Bangladesh’s livestock sector receives overwhelming response from youth and industry leaders alike

Staff Reporter : In a milestone moment for Bangladesh’s poultry research community, the Bangladesh Branch of the World Veterinary Poultry Association (WVPA-BB) successfully organized the final round of its inaugural “Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Presentation” competition today (July 11)  at the Dhaka Regency Hotel & Resort. Held for the first time in the country’s livestock-related industry, the event created a pioneering platform where science, innovation, and communication intersected to celebrate academic excellence and real-world relevance in the field of poultry research.

The program began promptly in the morning, setting a vibrant tone with the arrival of students, academic representatives, senior veterinarians, and top industry stakeholders. The opening remarks were delivered by Dr. Md. Nurul Islam Shawon, General Secretary of WVPA-BB, who reflected on the need for bridging the communication gap between research institutions and the practical world of animal agriculture. He noted that Bangladesh has long needed a dedicated stage where the nation’s young veterinary researchers could confidently present their work, adding, “Today’s initiative marks the beginning of a new era in science-driven livestock development.”

The inaugural session featured remarks from prominent figures including Professor Dr. K. M. Mozaffor Hossain, Convener of the National Veterinary Dean Council, who stressed the importance of nurturing interdisciplinary knowledge and institutional collaboration. Professor Dr. Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, Global Secretary of the WVPA, highlighted how Bangladesh’s growing poultry industry must lean on academic innovations to stay resilient amid global challenges. WVPA-BB President and session chair Professor Dr. Emdadul Haque Chowdhury concluded the opening segment, expressing hope that such academic showcases would become a permanent fixture in Bangladesh’s livestock sector.

At the core of the day’s proceedings was the highly anticipated 3MT competition itself, where a total of fifteen postgraduate students from various agricultural universities across the country competed. Each participant had just three minutes and one slide to deliver a compelling presentation of their research, challenging them to simplify complex scientific ideas while maintaining impact, clarity, and relevance.

The presentations spanned a wide array of urgent and future-oriented topics — from avian disease diagnostics, vaccine innovation, antimicrobial resistance, to broiler production sustainability, farm biosecurity and nutrition science. A panel of senior veterinary academicians and industry experts evaluated the presentations on content, delivery, and relevance to the poultry sector.

The final results saw Nazmun Nahar Jui from the Department of Path  ology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, crowned Champion for her powerful and well-structured presentation. The First Runner-Up title went to Mashsharat Maliha from the Department of Medicine at the same university, while Muhtadi Md. Waliulllah from the Department of Pathology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, earned Second Runner-Up recognition.

Most of the top leaders from the poultry industry and veterinary associations attended the program, lending prestige, guidance, and inspiration to the student participants. Their presence signified a collective endorsement of the next generation of veterinary professionals, and their speeches echoed a unified call to harness science and research to address the evolving challenges of the industry.

The closing session brought further energy to the event, beginning with a second welcome address by Dr. Md. Nurul Islam Shawon, who emphasized that this initiative was not just a competition but a declaration that academic research must be placed at the heart of policy, practice, and progress in Bangladesh’s animal protein sector. Mr. Mahabubur Rahaman, President of the Breeders Association of Bangladesh, delivered an impactful speech celebrating the courage and competence of the young researchers, encouraging continued partnerships between academia and industry. Mr. Moshiur Rahman, President of the World’s Poultry Science Association – Bangladesh Branch (WPSA-BB), stressed the value of institutional mentorship and reminded the audience that innovation flourishes best in collaborative environments.

Dr. Md. Abu Sufian, Director General of the Department of Livestock Services (DLS), attended as Chief Guest and expressed his full support for the program. He stated, “What we have witnessed today is not just academic competition, but a window into the future of livestock development in Bangladesh. These young minds are the architects of tomorrow’s safe, sustainable, and efficient food systems.”

The event concluded with a grand prize-giving ceremony and closing remarks by Professor Dr. Emdadul Haque Chowdhury, who called upon both universities and industry leaders to continue investing in youth, research, and intellectual exchange. He remarked that the success of this event demonstrates the hunger for knowledge among students and the readiness of the poultry industry to embrace new thinking.

The 3MT competition was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Inter Agro BD Ltd., whose support as lead sponsor ensured the program’s high standard and outreach. Additional institutional partners included ACE Pharmaceuticals, Jims Tech International, Incepta, Artevet Bangladesh, and Adyan Agro Ltd. Their collective backing reinforced the vital role that public-private partnerships play in advancing scientific development and professional capacity in Bangladesh’s veterinary and livestock sectors.

With enthusiastic participation from researchers, professors, industry professionals, and government officials, the event was hailed by all as a resounding success. Organizers affirmed that the 3MT competition will become a regular annual feature, aimed at nurturing a generation of veterinary scholars who can think critically, act professionally, and communicate with purpose. As Bangladesh’s poultry and livestock industries continue to grow, initiatives like this will play a crucial role in ensuring they are guided by knowledge, ethics, and innovation.
