SASSO’s ‘Breeding for Value’ Seminar Held in Dhaka: Experts Share Genetic Advances and Poultry Management Insights

Staff Correspondent: Global poultry breeding company SASSO hosted a high-profile seminar titled “Breeding for Value” on Monday (June 16) at the Holiday Inn Dhaka City Centre, bringing together leading experts, poultry professionals, and stakeholders from across Bangladesh’s poultry industry. The event focused on the latest advancements in traditional poultry breeding, genetic improvement, and technical management practices suited to the country’s unique conditions.

The day-long seminar, held at the hotel’s Ilish Seminar Hall on Level 16, was formally inaugurated by Edouard Perrault, Deputy Director of SASSO. In his welcome speech, Perrault emphasized SASSO’s longstanding commitment to delivering value-driven solutions to the Bangladesh poultry sector. He highlighted the company’s efforts in developing genetic lines that combine productivity, adaptability, and robustness, aligning with the specific needs of local farmers and consumers.

In a technical presentation titled “SASSO R&D Program for Bangladesh”, Perrault outlined the ongoing research initiatives tailored for the region. He discussed the company’s breeding goals of enhancing disease resistance, improving feed conversion, and ensuring better profitability for farmers through high-performance traditional poultry strains.

A key session on Parent Stock (PS) Technical Management was led by Alba Mesas, SASSO’s technical expert, who shared best practices for achieving optimal reproductive performance, hatchability, and flock health. She also addressed the importance of managing sexual maturity and controlling egg weight to ensure consistent production and product quality.

The seminar provided a platform for addressing critical health challenges faced by the sector. Dr. Myeong Seob Kim, poultry health specialist from Hipra, delivered two in-depth sessions on complex respiratory co-infections, under the themes “Respiratory Diseases Never Come Alone: Understanding Complex Co-Infection” and “Controlling Co-Infection”. Dr. Kim stressed that respiratory diseases are rarely isolated events, and effective management requires integrated vaccination programs and stringent biosecurity measures.

Later, Md. Mahiuddin and Perrault jointly presented on “SASSO Product Evolution in Bangladesh”, highlighting the improvements made in the company’s product lines to meet local production challenges, including climate resilience and market preferences.

Ali Haider, another SASSO expert, shared field results and practical management tips, with a particular focus on strategies for maintaining flock performance during periods of high temperature and humidity.

The seminar was structured to encourage participant interaction, with multiple Q&A sessions after each technical block. Attendees raised issues ranging from practical farm management to disease prevention and market trends. The discussions reflected the poultry sector’s growing interest in adopting advanced genetics and evidence-based management solutions to enhance productivity and sustainability.

The program included breaks for networking, and a formal dinner concluded the event, offering further opportunities for dialogue among industry players, technical experts, and company representatives.

Participants expressed appreciation for the seminar’s comprehensive coverage of genetic, health, and management topics, noting its relevance to current industry challenges. The organizers described the event as a success, citing the enthusiastic engagement of Bangladesh’s poultry community and reaffirming SASSO’s commitment to supporting the sector’s growth.
